Just The Right Shoe
The earliest ballet shoes were designed as part of a costume for Louis XIV, who ruled 17th century France and Fashion, and performed in his own Royal Ballet in ornate high-heeled shoes, an exaggerated form of the reigning fashion. The ballet slipper as we know it was also created from a fashionable shoe, an early 19th century slipper. To meet the technical demands of the art, the toe shoe for dancing en pointe was created by adding toe-padding. In the 20th century, glue stiffened the toe for better support, but it was still an intense work-out for shoe and dancer. Professionals often go through several pair a week! Still, the ballet slipper with its fragile appearance is a classic symbol of the graceful, fluid and -in pink, at least- feminine ideal.
Each 4" miniature shoe comes packaged in its own shoe box with an official 'Certificate of Authenticity' verifying that you have purchased a genuine Just the Right Shoe sculpture by Lorraine Vail.
